Ten of Auckland Council’s parks have been recognised as some of the best green spaces in the world – one up from last year, with new entry Taumanu Reserve in Onehunga making the cut.

The Green Flag Award is an international quality mark for parks and green spaces, which assesses how well green spaces meet the needs of the local community. Judging criteria for the awards includes quality of services, safety, maintenance, community involvement and sustainability.

The parks awarded with Green Flag Awards for 2018/19 are:
•    Ambury Regional Park (Māngere Bridge)
•    Auckland Domain (Grafton)
•    Long Bay Regional Park (Long Bay)
•    Olympic Park (New Lynn)
•    Parrs Park (Glen Eden)
•    Sanders Reserve (Paremoremo)
•    Taumanu Reserve (Onehunga)
•    Tāwharanui Regional Park (Tāwharanui Peninsula)
•    Waikumete Cemetery (Glen Eden)
•    Wenderholm Regional Park (Waiwera)

Environmental wins such as this are a welcome accolade for Auckland and are an important part of Destination AKL 2025, the new direction for Auckland’s visitor economy. The strategy supports the need to establish Auckland as an environmental and sustainable leader of New Zealand.

With summer on the horizon, those looking for a green space to enjoy a picnic lunch or a casual game of cricket don’t have to look far, with ten award-winning options available on Auckland’s public transport routes or just a short drive away.
