Agritech
Agriculture technology is a significant growth sector, with five Auckland agritech businesses in New Zealand’s top 200 tech companies. Innovative new solutions span subsectors including biotech, forestry, horticulture, aquaculture, viticulture, arable, and livestock and pasture. Agriculture and the primary industries sector remain the largest contributors to New Zealand’s economy.
Digital, creative and gaming
Half of New Zealand's digital and creative workforce is based in Auckland. Screen industry revenue has soared over the last decade, including production and post-production, visual effects, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). New Zealand gaming continues to grow globally, with sector revenue at $407 million in 2022, and Auckland accounting for 36 per cent of the country’s gaming sector.
Fintech
Financial technology, also known as fintech, is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing technology subsectors. Auckland ranks as one of the top 20 fastest emerging financial technology hubs worldwide. The city is home to numerous established fintech companies, including Invenco, Vend and SmartPay. Auckland’s highly competitive culture in this sector drives innovation and process automation.
Healthtech
Health technology is the largest secondary sector among Auckland’s top tech companies, with more than $2.3 billion in revenue in 2022; 28 per cent of the secondary sectors’ combined annual revenue. There are 12 Auckland-based healthtech companies in the TIN200 (the top 200 tech companies in the country), with Fisher & Paykel Healthcare the largest and most internationally recognised.
Aerospace
Auckland’s aerospace sector covers a wide spectrum of space and aviation activities, from advanced manufacturing and engineering to design and technical consulting, and features strong sector growth, R&D capability and increasing investment. Established companies such as world-renowned Rocket Lab sit alongside exciting start-ups like Zenno Astronautics and Argo Navis.
Cleantech
Auckland is home to over 40 innovative clean technology companies and innovators. The top 100 New Zealand cleantech business spent 95 million on R&D in 2020 with over 333 million in total revenue. Auckland is a partner of the New Zealand CleanTech Mission, a new national initiative that aims to boost the country’s global success. Notable CleanTech companies include ZeroJet, Mint Innovation and Biotelliga.
